Little Purple Plant
First came a fascination with this cutting. Most of its ‘original’ leaves didn’t make it, but I didn’t mind, the new ones looked much more interesting.

The start: I didn’t like anything but the choice of subject itself.

Drawing it again I did not just try to draw it better, but also to understand my fascination.

“Even bigger! Maybe try to make a “construction” kind of drawing of it?”

Of course, while I was busy doing other stuff, it continued to grow, and no wishing on my part that I could go back and draw it again in its earlier state could hinder it.

For my last attempts I moved to another sketchbook, with real watercolour paper.

I still don’t know which one I like best, still not really sure what exactly drew me to it in the first place. Its colour contrasts were certainly a factor, going from that dark purple through soft bluegreen to a very faint ochre, but it’s not them alone. If it was, I wouldn’t have felt like drawing it in pencil or monochrome ink…

That second one, with the jar in pencil lines, and the cutting in watercolor – that is my favorite of the set:)
I really enjoy that contrast between the finished and unfinished, the color and the airy white space.
I’ve been wanting to do some botanicals myself someday – so that’s inspiring !
