Scripture, Intellectual Property and Popular Music
With the printing press, importance shifts from the physical book to the content, and copyright is introduced as censorship. Written music becomes intelectual property, whereas unwritten ‘folk’ music in the big cities turns into ‘popular’ music, which is not bound to certain occasions anymore.
