Music automata are taken to a higher level with the ‘pianola’, and music does not only become independent of oral tradition and special occasion, but of individual skill, too. Although an expensive plaything, this is called a ‘democratization’ of making music, but is soon outplaced by the gramophone, which uses simple mechanics to capture sound.
